Organic synthetic raw materials, mainly used to produce freon (F-21, F-22, F-23), dyes and drugs, in medicine, commonly used as anesthetics. Can be used as antibiotics, spices, oils, resins, rubber solvents and extractants. Mixed with carbon tetrachloride can be made into non-freezing fireproof liquid. It is also used in the emission of smoke agent, fumigant of grain and standard liquid for calibrating temperature. Industrial products are usually added with a small amount of ethanol so that the resulting phosgene reacts with ethanol to produce a non-toxic diethyl carbonate. Before using industrial products, a small amount of concentrated sulfuric acid can be added, shaken, washed, dried by calcium chloride or potassium carbonate, and chloroform without ethanol can be obtained

When exposed to light and air, it is gradually oxidized to form phosgene, a highly toxic gas, so it should be kept in an airtight brown bottle. 1% ethanol is often added to destroy phosgene that may be formed. Not easy to burn, under the action of light, can be oxidized by oxygen in the air into hydrogen chloride and a highly toxic phosgene. Chloromethane is most easily hydrolyzed into formic acid and HCl, with poor stability, thermal decomposition occurs above 450℃, and can be further chlorinated into CCl4
