Carbon tetrachloride is a colorless toxic liquid, can dissolve fat, paint and other substances, volatile liquid, with a slightly sweet smell of chloroform. The molecular weight is 153.84, the density is 1.595g/cm³(20℃) at room temperature and pressure, the boiling point is 76.8℃, the vapor pressure is 15.26kPa(25℃), and the vapor density is 5.3g/L. Carbon tetrachloride is insoluble with water, but miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform and petroleum ether. It is non-flammable and was used as an extinguishing agent, but was discontinued because it reacts with water at temperatures above 500 degrees Celsius, producing carbon dioxide and toxic phosgene, chlorine and hydrogen chloride gases, and because it accelerates the breakdown of the ozone layer. The use of carbon tetrachloride is strictly restricted by the state, only for non-ozone-depleting material use and special use, as an extraction agent is not commonly used.
